June 11-13th • Oklahoma Road Trip
I started creating this blog first thing this morning then life got in the way. We just got back from being gone a week and the camper was upside down, the cleaning began, and then time to workout, finish some school with Lita. After all of that was completed the internet decided not to work. Here I am sitting in Texas at 3:38 pm on Tuesday, July 20th reminiscing about our first road trip to Oklahoma and through Texas on the way.
What happens when your husband says hey you want to go to Oklahoma with me? Of course, we all say, yes! We loaded up the truck and got ready for a road trip from Elephant Butte, NM to Elk City, OK. This drive was a 926 KM drive and took about 8 hours with no stops. We needed to stop multiple times for restroom and food breaks. No trip would be complete without Lita’s unicorn she got from her cousin Kaylani. We drove straight through to Elk City and got a hotel right in town.
After a long day of driving, we settled in a hotel in Elk City, OK. It was a small town that was right along Route 66. The next morning we got up early to start our trek back to New Mexico. We had to of course do some touring and check out the World’s Largest Route 66 Sign. Growing up Kevin’s dad (Garry) used to take his kids all over to see the “Worlds Largest” attractions and we try to stop and visit everyone we can along the way to continue the tradition. We have seen many attractions along the way and will have to get a photo album together for Grandpa Garry. One of the biggest reasons we are on the road is to make memories and share them with friends and family.
By this point, everyone was dying of starvation because our children think we never feed them. Being that it was Sunday in a small town there wasn’t much open. We went to the only breakfast place we could find but there was a long wait so we walked across the street to a Texas Bbq restaurant. It was pretty good and everyone made it there in one piece. I don’t know about your family but, my family doesn’t do well when everyone is hungry. We call that hangry because everyone seems to be angry until they are well fed.
Once, everyone as fed we decided it was time to hit the road for our 8 hour journey back to New Mexico. It proved to be a hot day and was 109 degrees. Luckily we were all in the AC truck during the heat. We enjoyed our ride back and made a stop along the way when we saw this old school grader. If you know my husband you would know that he has been a towns foreman for over 20 years and operated a lot of equipment over the years. Things like this really excite him. It is pretty interesting to see the equipment they used and it really wasn’t that long ago. We have advance so much in the last 100 years its pretty crazy.
