June 7th – 10th • Beating the Summer Heatwave

I’m getting caught up on the blog one day at a time and as I look back at these days of the summer heatwave I don’t miss it. One thing I can say is when I lived in Las Vegas for 9 years summers were my least favorite time of the year. I have had heat stroke and heat exhaustion many times in the past and really didn’t want to experience it again. We found the best schedule was to get up early and head outside for a couple of hours then head inside around 11, stay inside in the AC for the hottest part of the day, and then if it cooled off enough we would spend the evenings outside.

The best part of the mornings was doing school with Lita outside and listening to the boys playing music. Noah has really been focusing on practicing piano and guitar this month. I have seen a huge improvement in how he plays. I’m so proud of watching his talents grow and learn music and music theory. I don’t think our boys would have excelled in music as much as they have with our homeschooling. They have learned and taught each other more finding new songs and challenges to excel in.

Mornings were full with music and learning then we got our schedule pretty down pact after about a week. Outside time from 9:00-11:00 am, came in for lunch around noon, finished school with Lita, and then hang out time in the camper to enjoy the AC. Which if you have ever been in a camper when it is really hot it almost seems as if the AC doesn’t work but, it’s just because it was so hot it’s hard for it to keep up and keep everything ice cold. By about 8 pm every day the camper would cool down! We did cover all the windows with towels to help keep the heat out and that seemed to help. Although it was still a pretty hot couple of weeks that we spent in New Mexico.

After a few days of this heat, I was super excited to have a hair appointment because that meant I was able to be in a salon for a few hours with no heat. I got my hair done by a local hairstylist in Elephant Butte call Spa Escape and Salon. I’m always nervous to go to a new hairstylist but being on the road makes it hard to always see the same person. I read reviews and did research before we moved to this area and this salon had perfect reviews. I was able to get an appointment with the owner Annette and it was the best my hair has looked in a long time. She knew just how to cut and color my type of hair. I just wish I had time to do a massage while I was there too!

I must have complained about the heat enough because Kevin went to Walmart and got us a pool for our campground yard. It was such a relief to the heatwave. You would never think that something so small could make such a big impact. We all were very excited to cool of in the pool and it became part of our daily schedule to cool off daily! John had a lot of fun learning how to swim without floats as this pool was so shallow he could touch and the rest of us were just relieved to have some reprieve from the heat. This pool was the best investment for our summer so far. It got used manytimes and we all enjoyed the relief from the heat.
