Back to the Start

We’re lacking on our posts as of late with an extremely busy life but I figured this would be a good time to go back to how our family camping experiences started before we continue with our current adventures.

With adventure in mind, we go back to our first trip. At the time we had moved to a new town in Saskatchewan (Ituna) and this left limited options in the area for much to do. Camping in Saskatchewan is something almost everyone does and most of my favorite places were in Northern SK about 5 hours away from Ituna. With no way to camp at that particular moment in time what better way to get out family camping than with an RV? Not any RV though one on a budget, because we were getting our new life together, sorted out.

For once I actually can’t remember the origin of this camper. What I do remember is we were smart enough to bring our SUV along so we had something to explore with. When we set up we realized the camper had about the worst floorplan for a camper that we could possibly have found for a family. Once the beds were set up there was no room to even move around. The fridge barely worked and after it started raining we realized it leaked more than a sieve. We cut our first camping trip short after a couple of nights of frustration but not before I listed the motorhome for sale.

A guy on our route home offered us significantly more than we paid for it, an offer too good to pass up. With no real plan, we quickly grabbed a Uhaul trailer, unloaded our camping supplies into the Uhaul, delivered the camper, and headed home. Of course, the trip home couldn’t go without more problems. It was dark and late when we finally made it home and while backing in the trailer I heard a grinding noise. One of the U-haul trailer tires was completely missing, the one time we actually bought insurance on it. Although that was our first real camping trip and it was a little bumpy, we actually had a lot of fun. I took the kids fishing to some of my childhood favorites where we slayed fish and my younger kids caught their first fish. We also did lots of exploring and have come back numerous times since with nicer campers, although this wasn’t the end of our cheap camper adventures………
